You loved to play
hide-and-seek,
You knew the exact spots
people would neglect
to look.
Sometimes,
they would neglect
to look,
until you demanded
to be seen,
"Here I am!"
Your smile as radiant
as the midday sun.
Lost little girl,
there you were!
Clever little girl,
you won the game.
It's your turn now--
Turn around,
close those twinkling,
curious eyes,
and come find me.
--
How long have you spent
counting to ten?
Ready or not,
you are alone now.
It is dark,
and the sky seems
to have lost its stars.
All you've found:
in the mornings,
an empty ceiling;
in the evenings,
apologies.
Sometimes,
you would neglect
to look.
Is the game over?
