Surface

A city of molten concrete,
life seeping through
granite and grey,
we swim and we swim
in unbreathable water,
we swim and we swim
like fish, when drowning,
we take to the surface
to gasp in raw crisp air,
today I crawl home--
me, a land animal--
I find myself, craning
my neck toward the sky,
to break through the surface
I'd like to jump, to dive
to bathe in, into
the colors of dusk,
the November moon,
a look to the stars!
I gasp for air--
I resurface on land.
My lungs filled,
my chest heavy,
I should not have dared
to wish for the abyss.
